Training With JKS Fitness

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”

-Jim Rohn

Welcome to JKS Fitness located on the beautiful shores of Lake Erie, also known as the North Coast (Northeast Ohio). My name is Joy and my passion for fitness began back in 2004. I had gained 60 pounds with my second pregnancy and couldn’t get the weight off no matter what I tried. Depressed and frustrated, I did something I thought I’d never do…join a gym and I’ve been working out ever since.

It has been my passion to become a certified personal trainer and I am excited my dream came true. Whether you’re just beginning your fitness journey and don’t know where or how to begin or are in a slump and need someone to help motivate you, I would love to help you achieve your fitness goals.

ACE Certified Personal Trainer, ACE Senior Fitness Specialist, Certified Brain Health Trainer, Certified Total Healthworks Instructor, Silver Sneakers Instructor, Fitness Coach, Running Enthusiast, Breast Cancer Survivor. It’s never too late to make a dream become a reality.

After gaining 60+ lbs. with my second son I couldn’t get the weight off like I did when I was younger (I gained 60 lbs. with my first son, too, but life was different back then) so when my youngest was three, I did something I thought I never would have imagined…I joined a gym. My perception of gyms had always been they were filled with beef-cake guys and women with perfect bodies. Very intimidating for someone like me whose self-esteem was at an all-time low because of my weight. Thankfully I had a workout partner, my middle sister who had been going to gyms for years had encouraged me to join her gym. It wasn’t long before I realized the gym wasn’t anything like I imagined. Sure, you had your beefcakes and your barbie-doll women with perfect bodies but those were the exceptions NOT the rule. There were people of all shapes and sizes, different backgrounds, different ages, and everyone was there to better themselves in whatever form that meant. It was not soon after I realized the gym was not just a place to work out, it was a community and even when my sister moved and could now longer be my partner, it didn’t matter. I had made “gym friends” and my workouts continued.

I went from being scared and intimated, to being a full-fledged “gym rat” and there six days a week; three days doing weight training and three days doing cardio kickboxing (which is still my favorite cardio). I loved everything about it and it was then my dream to become a personal trainer began. Even if I couldn’t be at the gym, I worked out at home. I was in my “prime” and the best shape of my life, that is, until my life was turned upside down….at age of 42, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I was thrown a major curve ball and would never be the same both mentally and physically. My dream was put on hold.
